1st Asia Pacific Behavioural and Addiction Medicine Conference (1st APBAM 2010)

On behalf of the Organising Committee, it gives me great pleasure to extend an invitation to the 1^st Asia Pacific Behavioural and Addiction Medicine Conference (1^st APBAM 2010). This Conference will be held in Singapore, 18 – 20 March 2010.

The conference theme is "The Art & Science of Behaviour Change". This will give a unique look at how small changes to lifestyle can effect much greater changes in the outcomes and quality of life of individuals. This will not be a purely theoretical conference, but will challenge us by having leading clinicians and practitioners in the field of addiction and behaviour change share practical programmes for life change through workshops and plenary sessions. We will also have world class scientists review what is known through research and treatment programmes as well as policies on behavioural change and addictions in the Asia Pacific region. The key areas covered will be clinical updates and training in the key areas of prevention, treatment and continuing care management.

There will be 2-days of skills based pre-conference workshops for more in-depth learning from leaders in the field. Oral and poster presentations will also help us gain ideas and take a new look at how different national and cultural outlooks may be relevant to practice. We will also have forums and interactive sessions to encourage more sharing of what works in recovery.

We have spared no effort in making the scientific programme an exciting and productive learning time for scientists, therapists, clinicians, health professionals, counsellors, policy makers and administrators, researchers and clinicians. Your participation and support will stimulate collaboration and networking in this exciting field of clinical practice. We are also looking to grow the network of behavioural and addiction therapists from the whole Asia-Pacific region. To this end, an Asia-Pacific Certification Board (APCB) comprising member boards from countries of the region will also be introduced during this first APBAM.

The Asia-Pacific region is a unique melting pot of race, culture and religious values. We are looking to adapt and culturalise the best in the world to our unique local settings in the region. In the process, we hope to learn how to work better and smarter so that those suffering from chronic medical conditions and addictions may be effectively helped.
